Former J&J/Biosense Webster Exec, Roy Tanaka, Joins S4 Medical's Board of Directors

CLEVELAND, March 31, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- S4 Medical, an innovative medical device company focused on protecting the esophagus from damage during catheter ablation procedures, announced that Roy Tanaka has joined its board of directors, rounding out an impressive team. S4 Medical has developed a novel catheter called the "esolution" that utilizes a proprietary approach to deviate the esophagus.

A seasoned executive in the electrophysiology industry, Tanaka brings years of experience to S4. Tanaka joined Biosense Webster, a Johnson & Johnson company, in 1997 as U.S. president, and became its worldwide president in 2004 until his retirement in 2008.  During his tenure, the company experienced tremendous growth to a market leadership position. Since then, he has served on the boards of TomoTherapy, Volcano, Coherex Medical, Epix Therapeutics, Thermedical, EP Dynamics, VytronUS, and Adventus Ventures. "I have known (S4 cofounder) Emile Daoud for many years, and I respect his extensive clinical experience and contributions to the world of electrophysiology," Tanaka says. "I'm looking forward to being a part of the team that moves S4's technology into the market, making a valuable difference in AF ablation."

Dr. Emile Daoud, coinventor, cofounder, and chief medical officer, says Tanaka's leadership and knowledge in the field of electrophysiology brings a valuable perspective to the company. "Roy's impact on the world of electrophysiology is enormous. His leadership introduced great advances in the technologies we use on a daily basis. We are building S4 for the next phase of development," says Daoud, "and are grateful to add to our roster of talented directors who believe that this innovative technology will further our cause to bring safety and efficiency to ablation procedures."

In the last year alone, S4 achieved several exciting milestones towards bringing the esolution device to market, including a successful first in human study, an issued patent, and a new round of funding. "S4 is on a fast pace to success and we are excited to have Roy on the team. His knowledge, executive experience, industry contacts, and numerous successful product launches makes him the perfect addition to the S4 team," says cofounder and CEO William Fuller.

Oturu scores 30 as Minnesota beats No. 19 Michigan 75-67

Jun 3, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS — Daniel Oturu shook off an injury and had a career game to help Minnesota take down another ranked opponent. Oturu scored a career-high 30 points and the Gophers went on a late 11-0 run to beat No. 19 Michigan 75-67 on Sunday. The sophomore center had 20 points in a dominant first half, and he continued his roll with six quick points after the break. But with 14:35 remaining, he hit the deck hard while fighting for a rebound. He stayed on the floor for nearly five minutes, clutching his left shoulder as a hush fell over the...

Bey scores 33, leads No. 16 Villanova past Georgetown 80-66

Jun 3, 2020

PHILADELPHIA — Saddiq Bey hit eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points to lead No. 16 Villanova to an 80-66 win over Georgetown on Saturday. Bey, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, hadn't been much of a 3-pointer shooter this season for the Wildcats (12-3, 3-1 Big East). He'd made only 21 and four of those came in a nonconference game against Ohio. He shot just 3-for-10 overall in a win this week at Creighton, hardly a sign he was about to bust out with a career game against the Hoyas (11-6, 1-3). Left open, and determined to shoot, Bey had...

ALTENBERG, Germany — Olympic champion David Gleirscher finally got his first World Cup luge victory, leading Austria’s sweep of gold Saturday. Gleirscher finished two runs at historic Altenberg in 1 minute, 48.150 seconds to hold off Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller by about one-quarter of a second. Fischnaller finished in 1:48.383 and Germany’s Felix Loch was third in 1:48.420. Gleirscher becomes the third different Austrian man to win a race this season. He’s 1 for 1 at the Olympics, after being the surprise winner of gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. And he’s now 1 for 59 in World Cup races, getting...

Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun earns 900th career win

Jun 3, 2020

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Jim Calhoun’s 900th win looked like so many others during a Hall of Fame coaching career. He stomped. He screamed. He slammed objects. The only real difference is the sideline he now controls. The longtime Connecticut coach added another milestone Friday night when the University of Saint Joseph beat Pratt Institute 105-61. Now in his second season coaching in Division III, Calhoun joined Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Bob Knight — all former rivals and national champions at college basketball’s highest level — as the only coaches to coach at least 10 seasons in Division I...
