Lighthouse Alumni Program Holds Holiday Toy Drive to Benefit Low-Income Neighborhoods in Anaheim

December 10, 2019 - /PressAdvantage/ - Anaheim, California – The Alumni Program of the Anaheim Lighthouse, a drug and alcohol recovery facility in Anaheim, California, has collaborated with the City of Anaheim Community Services Department in holding a toy drive for kids this holiday season.

Jocel Bibera, alumni relations coordinator of the Lighthouse, shared that the alumni members have been collecting toys for children ages 0-17 since mid-November and they are very excited to distribute these to the children and spread some holiday cheer. All the toys collected will be distributed to families in Anaheim’s low-income neighborhoods on December 14, 2019.

“Through this toy drive, we want to encourage our alumni to become more involved in local community activities and recognize that being of service can be an important aspect in their recovery,” said Bibera.

The toy drive initiative is being held in partnership with the Neighborhood Services Section of the City of Anaheim Community Services Department.

According to Sandy Pantoja, Community Services Coordinator of the department, the mission of the Neighborhood Services Section is to facilitate a city-wide effort to improve the “livability” of Anaheim neighborhoods by enabling residents to assist themselves through the creation of partnerships between the city and other community-wide resources.

“We have a Neighborhood Improvement Team where each department in the city is committed to participating through a coordinated, inter-departmental approach. We work towards creating partnerships between stakeholders to work on issues of concern and identify actions to address them,” said Pantoja.

Oturu scores 30 as Minnesota beats No. 19 Michigan 75-67

Jan 28, 2020

MINNEAPOLIS — Daniel Oturu shook off an injury and had a career game to help Minnesota take down another ranked opponent. Oturu scored a career-high 30 points and the Gophers went on a late 11-0 run to beat No. 19 Michigan 75-67 on Sunday. The sophomore center had 20 points in a dominant first half, and he continued his roll with six quick points after the break. But with 14:35 remaining, he hit the deck hard while fighting for a rebound. He stayed on the floor for nearly five minutes, clutching his left shoulder as a hush fell over the...

Bey scores 33, leads No. 16 Villanova past Georgetown 80-66

Jan 28, 2020

PHILADELPHIA — Saddiq Bey hit eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points to lead No. 16 Villanova to an 80-66 win over Georgetown on Saturday. Bey, a 6-foot-8 sophomore forward, hadn't been much of a 3-pointer shooter this season for the Wildcats (12-3, 3-1 Big East). He'd made only 21 and four of those came in a nonconference game against Ohio. He shot just 3-for-10 overall in a win this week at Creighton, hardly a sign he was about to bust out with a career game against the Hoyas (11-6, 1-3). Left open, and determined to shoot, Bey had...

Olympic champ David Gleirscher gets 1st World Cup luge win

Jan 28, 2020

ALTENBERG, Germany — Olympic champion David Gleirscher finally got his first World Cup luge victory, leading Austria’s sweep of gold Saturday. Gleirscher finished two runs at historic Altenberg in 1 minute, 48.150 seconds to hold off Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller by about one-quarter of a second. Fischnaller finished in 1:48.383 and Germany’s Felix Loch was third in 1:48.420. Gleirscher becomes the third different Austrian man to win a race this season. He’s 1 for 1 at the Olympics, after being the surprise winner of gold at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. And he’s now 1 for 59 in World Cup races, getting...

Former UConn coach Jim Calhoun earns 900th career win

Jan 28, 2020

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Jim Calhoun’s 900th win looked like so many others during a Hall of Fame coaching career. He stomped. He screamed. He slammed objects. The only real difference is the sideline he now controls. The longtime Connecticut coach added another milestone Friday night when the University of Saint Joseph beat Pratt Institute 105-61. Now in his second season coaching in Division III, Calhoun joined Mike Krzyzewski, Jim Boeheim and Bob Knight — all former rivals and national champions at college basketball’s highest level — as the only coaches to coach at least 10 seasons in Division I...
