American Revolution Alternate History Washington Fiction Book Launched

Sidewise Award nominee Brent A. Harris announced the launch of his new alternate history, “A Time of Need: A Dark Eagle Novel”. The book explores the course of an alternate American Revolution following Washington’s change of fate as he joins the British and his struggle against his nemesis, Benedict Arnold.

Recent years have seen a growing popularity of alternate history, with the success of “The Man in the High Castle” and “Timeless” proving that explorations of historical alternatives are more and more appealing to modern audiences.

Published by Insomnia Publishing, Brent A. Harris’ new book explores both Washington’s internal struggle as he joins the British forces and his fierce conflict with Benedict Arnold, the determined general leading the Confederate Army.

According to its author, the idea for the novel originated in a piece of documentary evidence showing Washington’s initial admiration for the British cause:

“I fell in love with alternate history when I started reading books by the likes of Harry Turtledove and Robert Conroy and it started turning over in my head how our own history could have turned out very differently. Did you know that a young George Washington petitioned to join the British Army, for example? I started to wonder: ‘Well, what if he did fight for the British, how would things turn out differently?’ From there, the dominoes started to bump into one another and ‘A Time of Need’ was born, showing a different face of the American Revolution.”

Brent A. Harris was nominated for a Sidewise Award this year for his short story, “Twilight of the Mesozoic Moon”, in the anthology “Tales from Alternate Earths”. “It’s an honor to be listed among so many amazing stories,” Brent says about his nomination, “being on the same list as Bruce Sterling is a treat itself.”

He has also published short stories in science fiction, fantasy, and horror. “I write to entertain, but also to tease to the surface how our past choices have shaped us and what that means for our present and future.”
