Breaking Night Press Launches With #ownvoices Romance Titles From Katie Mettner

Today, Breaking Night Press announced the acquisition of two #ownvoices titles from established romance author, Katie Mettner.

Back in October 2020, Mettner wrote a blog post entitled “Why I’m Walking Away,” in which she detailed her many failed attempts to pitch novels featuring disabled characters. “Publishers are purchasing novels from able-bodied authors that have ridiculous, inaccurate portrayals of people with disabilities. They’ve perpetuated stereotypes for decades, causing irreparable harm to an entire population of readers.”

Mettner, an amputee herself, went on to note, “There are authors from every disabled subcommunity writing novels that accurately portray people with disabilities. Why are publishers afraid to publish them?”

Lisa Prodorutti, a long-time fan of Mettner’s, read the post and knew she had to reach out. As a major contributor to Breaking Night Press, she strives to find books that do not fit neatly into a single genre but are sure to keep readers turning pages well into the night. “There is a place for these stories in the market,” said Prodorutti. “Mettner’s extensive career has proven there is an audience for them. She’s a brilliant author and an incredible human being. I’ve learned so much from her, and I hope that readers will be as moved and enlightened as I have been by her work.”

Butterflies and Hazel Eyes, the first book in Mettner’s Buttefly Junction series, releases April 22, 2021.
